Established in April 2015, the Precision Medicine Catapult (PMC) aims to make the UK a world centre for precision medicine, growing businesses in the sector and ensuring sustainable healthcare resources worldwide.
The PMC is headquartered in Cambridge, Working with companies, charities, academia, policy makers, hospitals, patient groups and healthcare authorities in these clusters and internationally, the PMC will provide the leadership to grow the industry, while fast-tracking precision medicine technology adoption into routine patient care and delivering healthcare impact.
Together, we aim to make the UK the best place in the world to develop precision medicine and create favourable conditions for its evolution.
The PMC wants the UK to be the global leader in developing, delivering and commercialising precision medicine, and our ambition is to make these remarkable advances in research and innovation available to all.
To do this, we will help build a world-leading UK-based precision medicine industry. The PMC will establish this at pace and scale so that it is safe, reliable and efficient in delivering targeted treatments to meet patients’ personalised needs, at an affordable cost.
This will result in faster and cheaper drug and diagnostic development, improved patient outcomes, and strong economic growth for the UK.
The precision medicine sector is now at a ‘tipping point’. There has been significant investment in innovation through Government funding, academic research and industry initiatives, but the sector has now reached a divergent point in its maturity.
No individual organisation has the skills necessary to deliver precision medicine solutions efficiently, and at scale, and there is no neutral place where these groups can come together to collaborate. This is a particular problem for smaller innovative companies, but even the largest find it difficult to achieve fast adoption of new solutions.
The PMC will build the capability to provide holistic coordination and integration of the sector, with a critical mass of expertise and tools to drive and support the development and adoption of precision medicine solutions.
The PMC is funded by Innovate UK, the Government’s innovation agency. It is one of eleven Catapults designed to transform the UK’s capability for innovation in specific areas and help drive future economic growth. The Catapults have been set up to connect industry, academia, research and Government and to create new businesses, products and services. In particular, they will:
